GIS
(Geographic Information System) technology helps in storing,
analyzing and reporting spatial information. Municipal
bodies can use GIS effectively for strategic planning;
operational planning and implementation and monitoring of
civic works, improve property tax management and a host of
other applications.
In order to achieve the above benefits a city
needs to create a good base map of
administrative boundaries, roads, hydrology
(lakes and other water bodies) etc. Other useful
thematic layers such as cadastral (properties),
civic works and other layers can be overlaid on
the base map to make it useful for
implementation and management of projects and
works. The backend IT systems need to be linked
to the spatial features in the various thematic
layer in order to truly make the GIS system
useful in planning and service delivery.
Although the BBMP GIS project is work-in-progress
there are a few places that these GIS maps have
already been put to good use such as : Pothole
filling, asphalting of roads, maintenance
outsourcing of various roads etc.
