Maternity & Child Health Services
- The Bruhat Bengaluru
Mahanagara Palike has provided Medical care to
the community through a number of health care
facilities distributed evenly through out the
city limits in one form or another.
- There are 23 Maternity homes, 6 Referral
hospitals, and 23 Dispensaries & 17 sub health
offices belonging to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara palike.
- Under the IPP-8 programme, 55 health centers
were started, 39 of these have been handed over
to the BBMP. 16 centers are in the CMC areas.
There are 32 urban family welfare centers in
Bengaluru city.
- The services rendered in the maternity homes
urban family welfare centers and health centers
are aimed at the vulnerable population of women
and children.
- The services provided are:
- Antenatal care
- Natal care-in maternity homes.
- Postnatal care.
- Immunization.
- Family welfare services-permanent and
temporary.
- There are 725 beds in all the maternity
homes. Every year 45-50 thousand antenatal cases
are examined in these maternity homes alone.
- Approximately 50% of these mothers deliver
in our maternity homes, the remaining at Govt,
PrivateHospitals/Nursing homes. All the
maternity homes are equipped with an operation
theatre and conduct tubectomies both
conventional and laproscopic.
- Neonatal care is also provided in these
maternity homes .
- There are 6 Referral Hospitals , which
manage complicated deliveries and gynecology
patients.
One of this is referral hospital has been
recognized as laproscopic training center for
Karnataka. Dasappa maternity home is similarly
recognized for training doctors in ‘No Scalpel
Vasectomy’ .
- In the urban family welfare centers and
health centers out patient maternity child
health family welfare care is provided.
Immunization is done in urban family welfare
centers, maternity homes and in the health
centers & out reach centers.
- The progress in immunizations has been very
good. BCG, DPT, OPV, Measles have all been more
than 110% in achievement. Each urban family
welfare center and health center has a
population of 50,000. Paramedical staff renders
the domiciliary services.
- There are 4 paramedical staff in each center
who make house to house visits and give health
education in maternity , child health , family
welfare & other health aspects- like
tuberculosis, leprosy etc.
- There are 23 dispensaries belonging to
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike . Approximately 0.6
million patients are treated here per annum on a
day care basis. Basic curative services are
provided in the dispensaries.
- CITIZENS CHARTER- a citizen’s charter
was planned for all the activities in the
hospitals. Leaflets were made in English and
Kannada. These were made available to patients
attending the hospital. The citizen’s charter
was painted on the walls of the hospital.
- Board of visitors was instituted. 12 boards
have been formed. Respectable members of the
locality, local NGO’s , Corporators are the
members. The board of visitors meets once in 3
months and reviews the working of the
institutions. User fees collected in the
hospitals are utilized for urgent repairs and
emergency drugs.
